The Y receives $5,000 grant to support the First Grade Learn to Swim program.

The Record Searchlight / Scripps Howard Foundation has given the Shasta Family YMCA $5,000 for the “First Grade Learn to Swim ” program. This donation pays for swim lessons for 115 students, including instructors, pool usage, and program materials. The Redding School District will cover the transportation costs.

The generous support from the Record Searchlight means there will continue to be no cost to parents.

Water Safety Instruction

Teach children and adults to swim and give water safety presentations to kids and their parents as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor. It's a fun and meaningful job that's in high demand. Plus, Red Cross certification is recognized nationwide so you can work anywhere in the United States. This class will be taught over the course of 4 days. Students must purchase an instructor candidate kit at www.shopstaywell.com by the first day of class. Students must be at least 16 years old and a proficient swimmer.

Upon successful completion of the class, you will be certified to teach the following:

  • Parent & Child Aquatics
  • Preschool Aquatics
  • Learn-to-Swim
  • Safety Training for Swim Coaches
  • Longfellow's WHALE Tales
  • Water safety courses and presentations
