Who We Serve

I would like for you to get to know John (not his real name). He is a 12 year old boy who would like to have a mentor in his life. Someone who is a positive role model for him and would like to spend a little bit of time with him each week; someone who will listen to the excitement in his voice when he calls to report that he was just selected as the class leader. Someone who will help build his self-esteem and help encourage him to reach towards his goals in life because he can do anything he wants to do in life as long as he puts his mind to it. John needs to experience what it is like to interact with a positive male leader in his community who has made something with his life and isn’t in prison, like John’s dad or isn’t out on the streets abusing drugs like John’s mom.

John currently lives with his grandmother in a two bedroom house with 11 other people. Although his grandmother is very supportive, John hardly ever receives the individual time that he needs; that one-on-one attention to help build self-esteem, promote a positive attitude, decrease the potential of substance abuse and violence, promote social and emotional development, and increase school performance.

John is just one of over 100 youth who are currently awaiting someone to volunteer as a mentor with PlusONE and provide him with a new friend. Children like John wait for a mentor anywhere from a month to a year or more depending upon volunteers and funding to recruit, train, and match those volunteers with mentees. As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child." PlusONE Mentors is trying to fill a need in our community one child at a time. This effort takes contributions from people like you who care about the future we are providing for our children.

Your tax-deductible donation will be put to good use!

  • A $25 donation will go toward recruiting a mentor for an at-risk youth.
  • A $50 donation will go towards training materials to help the volunteer mentor gain the skills they will need for mentoring.
  • A $100-$500 donation will go towards providing activities for mentors and mentees, activities that build strong relationships like a day of skiing, a night of roller skating, a pizza night centered around a community activity, a fishing tournament, or a night of makeovers for our female matches.  These activities bring mentors and mentees closer and give a good sense of community.
  • A $500-$1000 donation will be used for everything above and allow for continued training for staff to provide the best services possible for our mentors.
  • A donation of $1000 will fully support one match for an entire year.
