QUICK FACTS

The McConnell Foundation generously purchased and granted the Eureka Way Property to help the Y build a healthier community for all of us. Its mission is to help build better communities through philanthropy.

BUILDING FACTS

  • The additional property will create a six-acre campus, adding 2 acres to the current 4-acre property.

  • It adds 23,000 square feet of useable space, bringing the campus to 71,000 square feet in all.

  • The building was developed in 1985 and needs substantial work.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • The mission of the Y is to help build a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, so financial assistance is available to those for whom membership fees are a financial burden.

  • The YMCA was founded in 1844 to give young men a safe, healthy alternative to London street life during the Industrial Revolution. Just like today, society was plagued by negative influences like widespread poverty and substance abuse. From small beginnings, the Y has grown into an international organization that strengthens communities by focusing on Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.

PURCHASE, RENOVATIONS, AND FUTURE USE

  • The McConnell Foundation generously granted the building and property at 1740 Eureka Way to the Shasta Family YMCA. The Foundation is granting the property “as is”. The Y is responsible for making the facility safe and useable.

  • Thousands of people go through the intersection of Eureka Way and Court Street every day, and what they see now is a derelict building with broken windows. Thanks to The McConnell Foundation, and with the support of our generous community, what they will see in the future is a vibrant, clean, and active Y campus welcoming them to our revitalized downtown.

  • The Y’s current facility is nearing capacity so adding space is necessary to serve our community. The Y is working with GRO Development, the leading consultant to Ys that undertake major expansions, to plan how best to improve the facility for programming and member use. The company has helped more than 500 YMCA’s all over the country.

  • Specifics are still under discussion, but preliminary plans between the two buildings include expanding and modernizing spaces for youth and teens, extra inter-generational and community spaces, and larger and better group, cardio, strength, and functional training areas. There have been no decisions on the pool. The Y will continue to research and ask for feedback as planning progresses!

  • Staff and board are planning ways to use the facility safely in its current condition to serve our community. To activate the space, the Y will immediately use the space for storage and offices.

  • The Timeline: This is a long-term, multi-stage project! Immediate priorities include:

  • 1-2 months: Eliminate blight, fix lighting, secure the building, cover the windows

  • 3-6 months: Remove the fence to create one large, efficient parking lot

  • 12-18 months: Open the building for limited services

  • 3-5 years: Unveil a fully renovated, gleaming modern Y our community deserves!
